Week 9 Discussion

I think music is so important to the fight for migrant justice because music is one of the few forms of communication where only the feeling of the song is important to understand the message. That is, non-verbal nature of music allows it to spread its message about migrant justice or other issues.

However, that being said I think music is also an oppotutiny to meld and combine the cultures in the migrant process. The example raised in the discussion question is the Chinese migrant experience in Jamaica. Music in this case is what allowed the Chinese and Jamaicans to create such a tight knit community through the Chiney Shops. These became cultural hotspots where the cultures on the island combined into something entirely unique and resulted in reggae.
